I contend that I am every bit as imperfect as you.
Though, your teeth may have a crooked bent
my skin bunches in odd ways when I smile my awkward smile at you.
And it's a shame,
because you like the way it frames my eyes,
and I like the way your skin-- speckled in a constellation of
red-brown flecks-- changes texture on every turn.
I smile again,
when you say my clumsy hands are like art
against your flesh.
You think yourself too thin
Yet, my day begins and ends on the path from your clavicle to your pelvic bone.
Bask with me in this sacred place,
that we may revel in our ugliness,
and rely on each other
as mirrors.
Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI like that line about the day beginning and ending from her clavicle to her pelvic bone. (Those are my favorite bones. I'm privileged to see many of them in my line of work.)
Breathtaking, Stressington. Tone is wonderfully sustained.

Thanks, my dears!
ReplyDeleteStonegazelle - that part came to me midway through the idea, I was worried if it would fit or not, but I just liked it so much that it had to go in somewhere, I am elated that you enjoyed it!
It reminds me a bit of e.e. cummings's poem, "since feeling is first", which is one of my favorite poems. You definitely have your own flair going though. I'm glad you decided to go with the instinct to put that part in there.
ReplyDeleteoh noes, there is a ghost commenter!
ReplyDeleteanyways, on the subject of E.E. Cummings; previously I'd only read one or two poems by him, and that was at least 10 years ago, but his style REALLY influences the way i think about writing this stuff.
The ghost commenter was actually me; your blog automatically puts in Sean's username and I didn't realize it until I had posted it, haha.
ReplyDeleteSo you have been reading Mr. cummings lately? I think he takes his style too far sometimes, but he did challenge a lot of preconceived notions about poetry and I've go to give him props for that. I like "since feeling is first" and "i carry your heart", of the ones I remember.
I appreciate the comment Porco, I've never been formally introduced to German Romanticism, but my interest is piqued.
ReplyDeleteI am excited. Stressington, you do have to allow e. e. cummings to use small letters in his name, because that is what he wants.
